You pretty much know the moment you see the logo that this site will deliver some tongue-in-cheek humor. “It’s a Baby Boomer World, Baby.” In case that slogan’s designed to make us feel both right at home, and also powerful, it works! We Boomers number 80 million or so and are the wealthiest, smartest, most entrepreneurial and savvy folks on the planet. So there, so there.
To quote the founders, “BoomerBrief.com is written by Boomers for Boomers. The brains behind BoomerBrief.com are Bob and Charlotte (Hill). Bob is a slightly-graying public relations exec with a database brain and an opinion about everything. His Wii Fit age is 85, but in real life he’s still in his 50’s. Charlotte is a PR exec too, and bears a striking resemblance to Olivia Newton John (yeah, she gets that a lot). She’s in her 50’s in real life and only 34 in Wii years. This really pisses off Bob. But, what can he do? She’s so fit she’d take him in a fair fight.“
Why did they found their site? “Why not? You know how people say “you write the book you need?” Well, that’s the creative genius behind The Boomer Brief. We didn’t see anyone talking to Boomers about the things we were interested in, so we decided to do it ourselves. The rest is Web 1.0 history.”
How Do You Come Up with Your Ideas? “We’re immersed in pop culture from the minute we wake up until we fall asleep on the couch. Our ideas come from everywhere: a trip to Target, something we saw on TV or an email we got from a friend. We like commenting on this stuff, kind of like the annoying guy seated behind you in the movies. The only difference is that you can turn us off without using your fists.”
Here’s what else I found out about Charlotte and Bob. It’s not easy to get an invitation to guest on their blog site, because they know what they want and it better be good. Themes? “Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be.” Entertaining? “You know that funny story you tell at parties about your dog chewing up the azaleas? Yeah, your wife’s right. It’s not funny.”
So it really was an honor, or even a coup, to have Charlotte ask me her excellent, insightful questions and to have a chance to answer without censorship or a word limit. I especially liked that she asked me what Boomer Babes would like most about my books. But best of all was Charlotte’s own intro to and review of my new book. When she likes something, she uses language as though she’s flipped the switch on an electron magnet. “You can’t escape the pull of Milford-Haven,” she wrote in her article “Take a Chance on Love” that even made me understand my books better! She also very kindly put What the Heart Knows on their Boomerlicious Goodies shopping page. If that doesn’t spark a Boomer run to Amazon, what will? I’ll be visiting Boomer Brief on a regular basis because these folks get me, and get what interests me. If I were you, I wouldn’t miss it.
